Developing a Magnetic Personality

Even though I know I shouldn’t play favorites, this was indeed one of my favorite podcast conversations of all time. Tommy’s stories and frameworks make “being magnetic” feel doable for real Gen X women with real lives, not just for the ultra-polished influencer crowd.
Key Takeaways
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Magnetic personality is a set of learnable behaviors—smiling, laughing, friendliness, presence—not a fixed identity or “you either have it or you don’t.”
- The relationships you build, nurture, and appreciate over time are your most valuable asset and can help you rebuild even if you lose everything else.
- You can consciously direct your thoughts and stories (Tommy’s “wolf nightmare” turned “Superman victory”) and use visualization and neuroplasticity to change how you show up.
- Turning a simple passion—like chicken wings—into a brand (Wingaddicts) is about consistent, enthusiastic action, not instant monetization.
- Avoid “deadly creature” behaviors that repel people (energy suckers, pukers, vultures, whiners, toppers, Tinkerbells, Facebook ass clowns) and instead practice presence, appreciation, and respect.

Magnetic personality is a learnable practice
Tommy frames “personality” as choices and habits, not a fixed trait. Smiling more, laughing easily, being friendly, and choosing to be outgoing. These are all small behaviors you can practice, even if you consider yourself shy.
Rather than deciding “I’m just not that type of person,” Tommy invites you to list the traits you admire. Treat those traits like a skill stack you can intentionally build. That reframes magnetism from something mystical into something practical: daily, repeatable actions that make you more approachable, memorable, and trusted.
Relationships as your greatest asset
One of the deepest threads in this episode is Tommy’s belief that relationships are your greatest asset. If you lose everything material, the people you’ve met, helped, and appreciated over the years are what allow you to rebuild.
We talk about how my mother was a “people collector.” People collectors remember names, sends cards, pay attention to life events, and keeps showing up in a warm, human way. For solopreneurs, that means clients, collaborators, listeners, and community members aren’t just “leads.” They are long‑term relationships that compound into opportunity over time.
Turning passion into a brand: Wingaddicts
The story of Wingaddicts is a masterclass in turning a simple passion into a recognizable brand. Wingaddicts started as an idea sparked by a Super Bowl ad about Facebook Groups: what if there were a group just for people who love chicken wings? From there, Tommy and his partners took it step by step—checking the name and domain, starting a Facebook community, then adding content formats like “Wings on the Hood,” restaurant features, and flavor exploration.
They designed wing trails, scorecards, and even an app to deepen the experience. Importantly, they didn’t rush to monetize; for a long time it cost time and money. The vision was simple and powerful: make Wingaddicts the name people think of when they think of wings, knowing that opportunities would follow once the brand was trusted and beloved.
Avoiding the “deadly creatures” in business
In his book, Appreciation Marketing, Tommy uses playful “deadly creature” archetypes to describe the behaviors that quietly repel people and stunt your business growth. There’s the Energy Sucker who walks into a room and drains the mood; the Puker who fire‑hoses people with info about their business at the slightest interest; the Vulture who swoops into events only to hunt for clients.
He also calls out the Whiner (who finds the cloud in every silver lining), the Topper (who must one‑up every story), Tinkerbell (physically present but mentally in their phone), and the Facebook Ass Clown (using social media for polarizing political rants). For Gen X solopreneurs, these are useful mirrors: not to shame yourself, but to notice which habits might be quietly pushing away the very people you want to attract, and then choose different, more magnetic behaviors.

Final Thoughts
What struck me most in this conversation was how grounded Tommy’s idea of “magnetic personality” is. It isn’t about becoming a glamorous extrovert or always being “on.” It’s about choosing appreciation over cynicism, presence over distraction, curiosity over self‑promotion, and enthusiasm over resignation.
And I’ll say it again, even though I know I shouldn’t play favorites. This really was one of my favorite podcast conversations of all time. Tommy’s mix of storytelling, humor, and deeply practical wisdom felt like sitting down with a friend who has tested things in the real world and is willing to share the playbook.
