What does it actually take to build a business that holds up when life falls apart? Not just a good quarter — but a business that survives a health crisis, a market shift, or a season when you simply have nothing left to give?
Today’s guest has a 15-year answer to that question. Ksenia Votinova-Arnaud joins me for episode 327 of Gratitude Geek Podcast.
Ksenia co-founded Le VPN from Paris, coached over 1,100 executives at INSEAD, and turned everything she learned into the Weatherproof Business™ method — a four-part system for building something real, resilient, and profitable without outside funding or burning yourself out.
Whether you’re pivoting an existing offer or wondering if your current business model can actually hold up, this conversation is going to give you a lot to think about.
Key Takeaways
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Your Why is the #1 resilience tool in your business — know it, write it down, keep it visible
- Before you build anything, talk to at least 10 people to confirm the problem is real and worth paying for
- If you’re selling time for money, you already have a cap — and most women have never calculated what it is
- A strong enough Why tells you whether to pivot or quit when something isn’t working
- Patience isn’t passive — it’s what keeps you in the game long enough for the experiments to pay off

Your Why Is the Foundation Everything Else Rests On
Most business frameworks skip straight to strategy, but Ksenia says the first component of a weatherproof business is internal.
“The very first component is not very popular, not many people are talking about it — and that’s the one that gives you the resilience, and that is your own why.”
Without it, there’s nothing to anchor you when things go sideways. She recommends keeping it visible — even if that just means a Post-it on your desk.
Start by writing your why in one sentence and put it somewhere you’ll actually see it.
Talk to Real People Before You Build Anything
The most expensive mistake I see women make is building something nobody asked for. Ksenia is direct about this:
“You never want to make the assumption that you have in your head and make it the absolute truth. It never is.”
Her rule is to talk to at least 10 people in your customer segment before spending a single dollar — and to listen for whether the problem is worth paying to solve, not just whether it exists.
Before you build your next offer, go have 10 real conversations first.
You Might Already Have a Cap on Your Income and Not Know It
If your business model is built on trading time for money, there’s a ceiling — and most of us have never done the math.
“This is your cap. Did you realize that this is your cap? And they never, ever made this calculation.”
Ksenia walks every client through this exercise because once you see the number, you can’t unsee it — and it changes how you build.
Grab a piece of paper and calculate your income cap today.
A Strong Enough Why Tells You Whether to Pivot or Quit
When one of Ksenia’s clients launched a wellness app that flopped on its first customer test, she showed up to their session ready to quit. Ksenia asked one question:
“Do you want to stop?”
The client said no — she’d do it for free.
“Okay, so your why is strong enough. Now let’s figure out how do we pivot.”
That’s the test, honestly. If you’d keep going for free, you haven’t failed — you’ve got information.
Ask yourself that question the next time something isn’t working.
Patience Is the Most Underrated Resilience Tool You Have
I said it in this episode and I meant it:
“One of the most important keys to having a resilient business or being resilient as a person is patience. Because without patience, you can’t be resilient.”
Ksenia tied it straight back to gratitude — you stay patient when you’re grateful for what’s already working, not fixated on what isn’t yet.
When you’re in that state, the hard seasons become information instead of evidence that you should quit.

“I don’t know any business owner who just started and from day one, everything went according to plan. It never does. So unless you have that very strong why inside of you — something built on your personal story, your mission, your values, something that you deeply believe in — you won’t make it through.” – Ksenia Votinova-Arnaud

Final Thoughts
Ksenia shares that your why is the one thing that determines whether you pivot or quit. I hope you walk away from this episode with a clearer sense of what yours is — and maybe a few less assumptions about whether your business idea is actually ready to build.
