What does sustainable business growth for solopreneurs look like when you refuse to trade your peace, health, relationships, and identity for revenue?
For many women business owners, the answer is not “work harder.” It is learning to notice when an opportunity, a client, or an old definition of success is taking more than it gives back
In Episode 339 of Gratitude Geek, business mentor Bianca B. King joins us for a conversation about client boundaries, business pivots, over giving, and why joy can be a legitimate key performance indicator for both life and work.
Bianca shares her path from corporate commercial real estate to entrepreneurship, how rapid growth brought misaligned clients into her business, and what she learned about the real cost of saying yes.
Key Takeaways
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Sustainable business growth includes protecting your peace, capacity, relationships, and health—not only increasing revenue.
- A profitable client can still be a “vampire client” if the work consistently creates stress, resentment, unclear boundaries, or an unsustainable workload.
- Treating joy as a KPI helps you notice whether your business is supporting the life you want instead of consuming it.
- Bianca’s Five As of Joyful Ambition—awareness, alignment, attraction, action, and abundance—offer a practical way to navigate a business pivot.
- Women solopreneurs can challenge expectations to overgive, underprice, and provide unpaid labor while still leading with care, ethics, and ambition.

Growth Should Support Your Life
Sustainable business growth is not just about more revenue, more clients, or a fuller calendar.
Bianca put it plainly: “We’re building a life, and the business should support it, not the other way around.”
For me, that means paying attention to whether my work supports my health, relationships, energy, and ability to enjoy the life I am working so hard to build.
Profitable Clients Can Drain You
Bianca calls them “vampire clients”: people who may pay well but “almost suck the loving life out of me.”
Not every client relationship will be effortless, and sometimes we take work because we need the income.
But a business can be profitable on paper while costing too much in stress, resentment, and lost capacity. We need to notice the trade-off before trading all of our peace for a profit.
Measure Joy Alongside Revenue
I love Bianca’s idea of measuring joy as a KPI. A KPI is a key performance indicator, and we usually think of those as revenue, sales, downloads, or growth.
Bianca asks a more personal question: “Am I actually enjoying the work that I’m doing?”
Joy does not replace financial metrics, but it can be a useful signal that tells us when something in our work, offers, relationships, or goals needs our attention.
Pivots Need a Clear Direction
A pivot can feel like failure when we are attached to an old plan, but Bianca reminds us that recalibration is part of business.
Her Five As of Joyful Ambition—awareness, alignment, attraction, action, and abundance—begin with understanding where you are and where you want to go.
As she said, “You have to have a direction in order for momentum to actually be able to take hold and do its job.”
Stop Giving Away Your Value
Many women were taught to care for everyone else first, accommodate endlessly, and see giving as proof of our worth.
Bianca connected that conditioning to underpricing, unpaid labor, and overgiving in business: “We’re just so indoctrinated in the patriarchy… that we literally just overgive.”
We can be kind, generous, and collaborative without making ourselves endlessly available or acting as though our expertise, time, and labor should be free.

Build a business you can live with
There is no single right pace, revenue target, client roster, or version of success that fits every woman entrepreneur. But there is value in asking whether the business you are building supports the life you want to have.
Bianca’s reminder is simple and useful: joy, peace, capacity, and financial stability can all belong in the conversation. You do not have to accept work that makes you smaller, constantly available, or perpetually exhausted in order to be a serious business owner.
