341: Scarlett Stanhope on the Physics of Small Business Momentum

Momentum does not have to look like constant forward motion, and business growth for women over 40 does not have to require pushing through every hard thing alone. Whether you are rebuilding after cancer, divorce, loss, burnout, or a business detour you did not see coming, you can choose small, aligned steps that make your…

The Slingshot Effect

Interestingly, the slingshot effect has been a recurring theme throughout the Gratitude Geek Momentum Series. Sometimes the pullback, detour, or hard season is exactly what gives you the energy to move forward.

In episode 341, I’m joined by Scarlett Stanhope, founder of The Biz Hippie. Scarlett is a money and abundance coach. We chat about choosing aligned momentum, trusting the wibbly-wobbly path of progress. And of course, building a business that supports the life you actually want to live.

Key Takeaways

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Momentum is not always positive or aligned. Having a clear vision helps you notice when your effort is carrying you in the wrong direction and choose a more meaningful path.
  • You do not need to wait for a dramatic rock-bottom moment to make a change. You can decide that the discomfort of a new choice is better than staying in a situation that no longer fits.
  • Progress is rarely a straight line. The “three steps forward, three steps back” feeling can be part of building the strength, clarity, and momentum to keep moving.
  • Gratitude helps entrepreneurs stay connected to the whole ride. This includes setbacks, uncertainty, and hard seasons—rather than treating every low point as proof they are failing.
  • Building a business does not mean doing everything alone. Supportive people, mentors, and intentional financial investments can strengthen your confidence and help you move toward your goals more sustainably.

Choose Momentum With Intention

Momentum is not automatically good just because you are busy, productive, or moving fast. Scarlett points out that we are always building momentum in some direction, but that direction may be shaped by societal pressure, old expectations, or what we think we should be doing rather than by alignment, passion, and purpose. A clear vision gives you a way to notice whether the vehicle you are driving is actually headed where you want to go—and to make a course correction when it is not.

Change Before Rock Bottom

You do not have to wait until life becomes unbearable to choose a different path. Scarlett’s personal pivot came after a painful, overwhelming moment, but she also explains that life had offered her many smaller signals that something was not working. The invitation is to pay attention sooner: decide that the discomfort required to make a change is a better kind of discomfort than remaining in a reality that is already draining you and may become even harder over time.

Expect the Wibbly-Wobbly Path

Growth is not a straight line, and a setback does not erase the progress you have made. Scarlett describes the “path of progress” as a wibbly-wobbly journey out of your familiar comfort-zone circle, where centrifugal force can pull you back toward old habits and beliefs. Instead of making a hard day, missed habit, or slower season mean that you will never change, recommit to what you want and take one more step in that direction.

Practice Gratitude Through Lows

Business is an emotional roller coaster, complete with wins, doubts, momentum, disappointment, and the occasional “is any of this working?” moment. Gratitude does not require pretending that challenges are pleasant; it helps you stay connected to the whole journey, appreciate what the hard moments are teaching you, and move through low points without turning them into a downward spiral. Like a roller coaster, some of the downward movement is what gives you the momentum to round the corner or climb the next hill.

Build Your Support Team

Being a solopreneur does not mean you must solve every problem alone. Scarlett shares that asking for help challenged her identity as an independent, capable person, yet she learned that accepting support does not diminish competence or resilience. Putting yourself in rooms with people who believe in you, understand your vision, and have walked a similar path can fuel your belief, strengthen your momentum, and help you get where you are going with more support and less unnecessary struggle.

Scarlette Stanhope shares practical ways to build aligned momentum, work through setbacks, and grow a business that supports your real life.
