Sci-Fi Book Pod with Shane and Kandas Rodarte

Behind the Mic: What 11 Years of Podcasting Didn’t Prepare Me For

After 11 years podcasting, launching Sci-Fi Book Pod brought unexpected challenges and a fresh way for Shane and me to reconnect over speculative fiction.

Spread the Love

After 11 Years, You’d Think I’d Have this Down…

You’d think that after 11 years of podcasting, launching a new show would be like brewing a pot of coffee: routine, comforting, and slightly addictive.

Turns out, it’s more like assembling an IKEA starship with instructions written in Klingon. Plus, my husband, Shane, is usually the one who brews the coffee.

A New Mission With My Favorite Co-Pilot

When Shane and I decided to launch Sci-Fi Book Pod, I thought my biggest challenges would be tech setup or getting the RSS feed to behave. I wasn’t prepared for the true adventure: collaborating with my husband again.

We built a successful custom furniture business together. We knew how to saw, sand, and ship without (too many) splinters. But after retiring in 2017, we drifted into our separate creative orbits.

Sci-Fi Book Pod has become our new shared galaxy — a way to reconnect over something we both enjoy.

Inviting Fellow Nerds into Our Galaxy

We’ve always loved reading (or rather, listening to) and watching speculative fiction together.

This new podcast gives us a platform to share what we read with other nerds and geeks like us.

Plus, we’re inviting some of our grooviest friends to join the conversation!

From Dystopias to Utopias — And Everything In Between

Each guest chooses the book we read, which means we’ve been thrown into literary wormholes we never would’ve chosen ourselves.

Some books explore dystopian wastelands that make you want to double-lock your airlock at night; others paint utopian futures so radiant you almost believe we’ll get there someday.

Why We’re Doing This (Besides the Fun)

And that’s the real gift of this show: it forces us to stretch, question, dream, and — most importantly — share all of that with each other (and you).

At its core, speculative fiction is about possibilities. The best authors don’t just imagine different worlds — they hold up a mirror to this one, asking us if we’re brave enough to change.

I like to believe that humanity can come together someday, even if we have to warp through some pretty messy chapters first.

Until then, Shane and I will keep exploring these stories together, hoping you’ll join us for the ride.

Stay Groovy!

  1. Congrats on combining your great loves into one wonderful podcast! This is not my genre at all, but I’ll listen to a few episodes and see what happens. I love the behind the scenes look into how to do a podcast. It’s a lot of work. My sister and I always wanted to do one together. Maybe in a few years.

    1. A great strategy before you start your own podcast is to guest on other shows in your zone of genius. Check out my guide to getting booked: https://kandasrodarte.com/get-booked-on-podcasts/

  2. Always a new adventure, even if it seems we know what you are doing. Good luck!!!

    1. I love new adventures!

  3. Congratulations and how exciting for you and your husband to be working together on your new adventure. I liked the interview with Paul, especially all his different accents.

    1. Thank you! Paul is amazing!
