Why Your Business Feels Stuck (and the Invisible Growth Happening Right Now)

Growth doesn’t happen overnight (no matter what Amazon Prime tries to tell you). The Law of Gestation reminds solopreneurs that big wins take time — and patience is your secret weapon.

The Law of Gestation for Solopreneurs

Are you pushing hard towards your goals but feel like you’re stuck in molasses? You’re showing up, checking off tasks, posting, planning — and yet… crickets.

Welcome to the (very human) frustration of wanting overnight success in an Amazon Prime world.

But here’s the unfiltered truth: growth doesn’t work on a same-day delivery schedule. Enter the Law of Gestation — a universal principle that’s just as relevant in 2025 as it was when ancient farmers watched seeds sprout.

A Lesson in Waiting

When my husband and I launched our custom furniture business, we were freshly married — and I had just found out I was pregnant. (Yes, all in the same wild six-month whirlwind.)

We bet every last penny on a mailer campaign, thinking it would bring immediate orders. We carefully chose the neighborhoods, bought a list, and sent out a beautifully designed flyer showcasing custom built-ins.

And then? Crickets.

No calls. No orders. And, no excited customers eager for handcrafted magic.

We had no choice but to pivot and hustle for other ways to make ends meet — after all, I was pregnant, and my husband only knew how to make furniture. But we kept showing up, kept working, and trusted (at least as much as two terrified young entrepreneurs could) that something was happening under the surface.

And then, nine months later — poetic timing, right? — the orders started rolling in. That same flyer ended up bringing in a return of 15 to 20 times our original investment. Even though we had already shifted directions by then, we still honored every single order.

This taught me a lesson I carry into every part of my business today: just because you don’t see results right now doesn’t mean your seeds aren’t growing. Sometimes, the universe (and your market) are working on their own timetable — and your job is to nurture, water, and keep going.

What is the Law of Gestation?

The Law of Gestation is nature’s way of reminding us that everything worthwhile takes time to develop. Every seed, idea, business, and personal transformation needs an incubation period — a phase where growth is happening invisibly before anything sprouts above the surface.

Think of it as nature’s built-in project timeline. Whether you’re building a thriving business, writing a book, or finally launching that podcast you’ve been dreaming about (ahem), there’s a gestation period. It’s unavoidable — and that’s a good thing.

Why is the Law of Gestation so important today?

In an era where AI promises instant answers and algorithms tempt us with overnight virality, patience has become a lost art. But the Law of Gestation reminds us that real, lasting success isn’t built in a viral video moment.

Understanding this principle can save you from burnout, anxiety, and the constant urge to pivot prematurely. It forces you to focus on what matters: consistency, clarity, and small daily actions that add up over time.

How to apply the Law of Gestation

  • Set clear goals, then break them down ruthlessly. Overwhelm is the enemy. Micro-goals help you keep moving without drowning in the big picture.
  • Stay consistent even when no one’s watching. The magic is happening underground — keep nurturing.
  • Track your milestones, not just your wins. Celebrate the invisible growth: the draft nobody saw, the email no one replied to yet, the prototype that’s still in beta.

Like a seed needs soil, water, and sunlight, your goals need steady action, patience, and belief in your vision — even when progress feels painfully slow.

Good Things Take Time

The Law of Gestation is your permission slip to stop comparing your journey to someone else’s highlight reel. Embrace the season you’re in, trust the process, and know that true growth takes time — and that’s exactly what makes it meaningful.

  1. Love this article…..this is a must read for all solopreneurs to realize the “gestation” period of a new business…..I remember years ago when I went to the SBA and outside sat two older men who said 5 years….well I will not go into the whole conversation- but in essence what you and they said pair up! Your awesome!

  2. 🌱 Growth is never wasted — even when it’s invisible. Have you ever had a moment in your business where something finally paid off after a long wait? I’d love to hear your story. Let’s remind each other that patience is part of the process. 💬👇

  3. Thank you for this reminder, so much needed in this fast pace world of AI and Amazon

  4. This is a very good reminder when we feel the need to compare our businesses to others. My biggest take-aways: “Patience has become a lost art”, “Celebrate the invisible growth”, and “Overwhelm is the enemy”. Really great article!

  5. That had to be a stressful time in your life – new marriage, new business, and baby on the way.
The law of gestation is so true even outside of business as well. Time and energy is never wasted – even it it doesn’t turn out the way we’d hoped. Thanks for this reminder!
