Today is Small Business Saturday, and I’m guessing your inbox and social feeds are flooded with “50% off” and “biggest sale of the year” promotions.
If you’re a woman solopreneur feeling pressure to join the discount madness, I have something important to tell you.
You don’t have to.
After 300+ podcast conversations with successful entrepreneurs and nearly two decades running a mom and pop business with my husband, I’ve learned something crucial.
The businesses that survive long-term aren’t the ones slashing prices every November. They’re the ones building relationships that last.
Here’s your permission slip for today:
You’re allowed to skip the sales.
Not every business needs a Black Friday or Small Business Saturday promotion. If discounting doesn’t align with your business model or your values, don’t do it.
Your value doesn’t change based on the calendar.
What you offer is worth full price today, tomorrow, and every other day of the year. A promotional holiday doesn’t suddenly make your expertise less valuable.
Relationship building beats price slashing.
The clients who only show up for discounts aren’t your people. The clients who value your work, trust your expertise, and refer everyone they know? Those are your people. And they don’t need a discount to work with you.
Today is about celebrating small businesses, not racing to the bottom.
Small Business Saturday was created to support local businesses and entrepreneurs like you. Support doesn’t mean you have to give your work away at a discount.
The right clients will pay full price.
When you position yourself as the expert, when you build genuine relationships, when you show up consistently and authentically, the right clients find you. And they’re happy to pay what you’re worth.
My custom furniture business never competed on price. We competed on craftsmanship, on relationships, on being the people antique collectors trusted to get it right.
That’s what built a business that lasted nearly two decades.
You get to build your business the same way.
So today, if you’re celebrating Small Business Saturday, celebrate it your way. Show up authentically. Connect with your community. Share your story. Build relationships.
And if that doesn’t include a discount? That’s more than okay.
Stay Groovy!
