Recorded: November 13, 2025

Tired of staring at blank screens every Monday morning? You’ve been creating content for months (maybe years). Stop starting from scratch and learn how to mine the gold you’ve already created.

In this hands-on Small Business Coffee Hour, I demonstrate how to use NotebookLM—Google’s free AI research tool—to identify your true niche, find content gaps, and repurpose everything you’ve already written into fresh social posts, blog outlines, and lead magnets.

✅ The basics people forget – How to save emails as PDFs and what file types you can upload

About This Session

This wasn’t theory—it was a live working session where I took real questions from attendees and demonstrated solutions in real-time using NotebookLM.

Example 1: Math Tutoring Content Strategy

When a fifth-grade math tutor asked how to use NotebookLM, I demonstrated:

  • Source gathering – Uploaded three Khan Academy videos about the Pythagorean theorem
  • Custom configuration – Set the notebook to “act like a math teacher for fifth graders”
  • Question answering – Asked “How do I know which side of a triangle is the hypotenuse?” and got age-appropriate explanations
  • Content creation – Generated blog post ideas and social media content
  • AI collaboration – Took the research to Claude to create Instagram reels, carousel posts, and LinkedIn content for promoting tutoring services

Example 2: Analyzing Personal Content Library

I uploaded my last 50 blog posts to NotebookLM and asked:

  • “What is Kandas Rodarte’s business niche?” – Discovered I focus on psychographics, systems-based strategies, and anti-hustle culture
  • “What is the biggest pain my ideal client feels?” – Found the conflict between hustle culture and hard-won resilience
  • “What content is missing?” – Identified that my audience wants more “how-to” content and less “why you need to” content
  • “What are the top 10 most quotable statements?” – Generated Instagram-ready quote cards with proper attribution

Example 3: Repurposing Podcast Interviews

When a participant asked about repurposing, I showed how to:

  • Upload YouTube videos – Added a podcast interview to the notebook
  • Extract standout quotes – Found three powerful quotes for social media promotion
  • Identify gaps – Discovered topics covered in the video that weren’t in blog posts
  • Find viral moments – Asked NotebookLM to identify sections most likely to go viral as clips
  • Create clips – Used YouTube’s clip feature to share specific segments on social media

Key Frameworks Shared

What You Can Upload to NotebookLM:

  • Website URLs
  • YouTube videos (with transcripts)
  • Google Docs and Google Slides
  • PDFs (meeting transcripts, course materials, emails saved as PDFs)
  • Text files
  • Audio files
  • Up to 50 sources per notebook (free version)

Questions to Ask Your Notebook:

  • “What is my business niche based on these sources?”
  • “What is the biggest pain point my ideal client feels?”
  • “What content is missing to address [specific pain point]?”
  • “What are the top 10 most quotable statements from these sources?”
  • “What gaps are there in the information I’ve provided?”
  • “Do these sources target the correct audience?”
  • “Identify the sections most likely to go viral as clips”

What NotebookLM Doesn’t Do

NotebookLM is a research tool, not a content creation tool. Here’s what it can’t do:

❌ Write Instagram posts – It can’t create social media content directly. Instead, ask “What are the top 10 most quotable statements from these sources?” and turn those into posts.

❌ Search the internet – It only analyzes content you upload. It won’t crawl the web for you.

❌ Connect to live data – Everything must be uploaded as a source (PDF, URL, audio, etc.)

❌ Create polished final content – The writing isn’t publication-ready. Take research to Claude or ChatGPT for final drafts.

❌ Read Facebook links – Facebook URLs don’t work as sources

❌ Process very long videos – Video files are often too long; use audio files instead

❌ Remember unsaved notes – If you don’t click “save,” your notes disappear when you leave

What to do instead: Use NotebookLM to identify patterns, gaps, and quotable moments. Then take that research to a writing tool like Claude or ChatGPT to create your final Instagram posts, blog content, or marketing materials.

Reports NotebookLM Can Generate:

  • FAQ lists (content idea goldmine)
  • Briefing documents
  • Study guides
  • Instructional guides
  • White papers
  • Blog post outlines
  • Audio overviews (podcast-style)
  • Mind maps
  • Flashcards and quizzes

The NotebookLM + Claude Workflow:

  1. Research in NotebookLM – Upload your content and ask questions
  2. Copy insights – Save the valuable answers NotebookLM provides
  3. Move to Claude – Paste research into Claude with context about your business
  4. Generate content – Have Claude create social posts, blog posts, or marketing materials
  5. Grade and improve – Ask Claude to “grade this blog post” and “implement your improvements”
  6. Add your voice – Always rewrite AI content to sound like you

The Most Important Insight

NotebookLM is a research tool, not a writing tool. Think of it as your highly efficient research librarian who reads everything you give it, synthesizes findings, points out where information came from, and identifies what’s missing entirely. Then you take that research to writing tools like Claude or ChatGPT to create the finished content.

Resources Mentioned

Key Concepts:

  • Research vs. Writing Tools – NotebookLM researches, Claude/ChatGPT write
  • Source Attribution – NotebookLM uses brackets with numbers to show where information came from
  • Custom Configuration – Set a specific role for your notebook (content manager, social media expert, etc.)
  • 50 Source Limit – Free version allows 50 sources per notebook
  • Private by Default – Your uploaded content is only visible to you unless you share
  • Repurposing Mindset – Stop creating from scratch when you’ve already done the work

My Pro Tips:

  • Upload as many sources as possible (up to 50) for better research results
  • Always save notes you want to keep—unsaved notes disappear
  • Use the copy button to transfer research to other AI tools
  • Never copy and paste AI content verbatim—always add your own voice
  • Type out AI suggestions rather than copy/paste to naturally add your voice
  • Ask “What’s missing?” to find content gaps you can fill
  • Use the “grade this blog post” prompt in Claude for instant feedback
  • Configure your notebook with a custom role for more relevant answers
  • Remember: AI uses words like “delve” and too many colons—rewrite everything

What NOT to Do:

  • Don’t use NotebookLM as a writing tool (it’s for research only)
  • Don’t forget to save your notes (they’ll disappear)
  • Don’t copy and paste AI content without editing
  • Don’t expect NotebookLM to search the internet (it only uses what you upload)
  • Don’t upload fewer than 10 sources if you want quality insights
  • Don’t skip the custom configuration (it dramatically improves results)
  • Don’t share proprietary content publicly (but uploading to NotebookLM is private and safe)
