A Day at the Zoo

Rescheduled all my client calls for a Tuesday zoo trip with my daughter. No regrets. This is why we chose the solopreneur life—to show up for the moments that matter, honor our heroes, and build businesses that work around our lives, not the other way around.

Spread the Love

A Day at the Zoo

When my daughter, Dorothy, was young, we’d often “sneak away” on a weekday for mommy daughter adventures.

This usually meant a day at the natural science museum, and occasionally it meant the zoo.

That flexible schedule is what I love most about being a business owner—the work-life balance that lets me say yes to what matters most.

Dorothy is now an adult, with a masters in paleontology, working at a local history and science museum.

When she asked me to go to the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids with her on Tuesday, of course I said yes.

I rescheduled all my appointments and we had a glorious mommy daughter adventure.

It was a lovely day. Being a Tuesday, the zoo was practically empty and we had a great time.

Honoring a Legend

As I sat down to write about our zoo adventure, I learned that Dr. Jane Goodall has passed away.

Her pioneering work with chimpanzees inspired countless women, including me, to pursue science and dream bigger.

Though I ultimately took a different path than the anthropology career I once imagined for myself, she remained a hero to me.

This pile of chimpanzees? You guessed it. They can’t.

There’s something bittersweet about learning of Jane Goodall’s passing after having just spent a day at the zoo with Dorothy.

True work life balance means protecting time for what matters, even when we don’t yet know why it will matter so much.

When’s the last time you rescheduled work for something that mattered more?

Stay Groovy!

PS – We also found out this week that Nyx, the street cat who adopted us last month, is pregnant and due this month. Which is probably why she adopted us. She knew we were safe. More on that later.

  1. This was such a beautiful read. I love how you wove together your zoo adventure, your daughter’s journey, and the tribute to Jane Goodall. What a reminder of how those small choices to prioritize family moments can become such treasured memories.

I especially connected with what you said about true work-life balance, protecting time for what matters most, even when we don’t yet know why. Thank you for sharing this story; it made me reflect on the importance of slowing down and saying yes to the moments that matter.

Can’t wait to hear more about Nyx and her kittens!

    1. A kitten having kittens was not on my 2025 BINGO card, that’s for sure!

  2. As a fellow entrepreneur, I love EVERYTHING about this. How fantastic to go spend a day on a whim with your daughter. Amazing!!!

Dr. Jane Goodall was beloved of my dear friends Amy and Nancy Harrington who posted a tribute to her yesterday, too. She was clearly impactful on so many people.

Here from the UBC. So glad to have discovered you. I am a sci-fi author, podcaster, and super nerd who loves animals too! I look forward to reading more.

  3. Kandas, a great reminder that you can have a business that supports time freedom if you make it a priority for yourself. A few weeks ago, I treated myself to a matinee movie on a Tuesday, as it was important to me to have a “me” date. Now I have an urge to spend a fall day at the zoo—time to make it happen. -Kim

    1. Ooh I love that idea – a matinee on a Tuesday!

  4. I regularly reschedule work for meaningful adventures! Lmk if you want to go to the zoo with me.

      1. I love the spontaneous decisions. It’s been a while since I’ve done that, but maybe it’s time. Great read.
